When I decided to undertake the Master in Tunnelling and Tunnel Boring Machines, edition 2005/2006, I was working as a Geothechnical Engineer in a small local consultancy. The Master was a unique opportunity to enter the fascinating world of tunnels. I had the chance to meet international experts, learn from their experience and create a wide professional network. For the internship I was seconded to Astaldi S.p.A. on the costruction site of Brescia Metro, where I shadowed the TBM engineer. Straight after the Master I joined Halcrow Group Ltd. in London, to get involved into the Crossrail project. I currently work as a tunnelling engineer within Impregilo S.p.A.

I was a master student in tunnelling and TBMs at Politecnico di Torino in association with COREP from 2005-2006. I was very impressive with the good and intercultural education & training enviroment in both schools POLITO and COREP. I was happy to have chane to study together with more than a dozen student from 7 countries in 3 continents. It helped us to expand networking and this has been helping us in our career to date and in the future, too. I fully support ITA, POLITO, and COREP to continue recruiting international students now and in the future, for the benefit of the world tunnelling community.

This Master offers students access to some of the bestminds in tunnelling today. The small classes and lectures offer an opportunity for learning that is only limited by the effort they put into it. From design principles to practical construction logistics, the Master gives a good overview of what it means to be a tunnel Engineer.

I found the master course to be an intensive immersion in the world of tunneling and TBMs. The wealth of practical information provided throughout the course has proven useful afterwards during my work as a tunnel design engineer with Tunnelconsult scp. The course not only provided the opportunity to meet, interact and learn from the top tunnel engineers and consultants worldwide but also to spend three months as an intern at Tunnelconsult, the tunnel consultancy firm that later hired me. I believe that the possibility of taking part in an internship and apply what was learned during the theoretical lessons is what makes this master particularly attractive.

Tunnelling is increasingly being seen as an environmentally preferable means of providing services to densely populated urban areas but at the same time it is a fundamental solution to avoid the massive impact of the large amount of civil infrastructures which the modern World requires everyday more. Before the Master, I was already working in such a fascinating field, that I have had the chance to deal with during my graduation thesis and in Geodata Group. Thus, I decided to improve my skills and to widen my point of view so as to interact with the most famous professionals, with the greatest international challenges and the most stimulating research topics nowadays ongoing all over the World. The course lectures are extremely interesting and cover the whole field of application of tunnels and provide students with a complete knowledge of each aspect of the geological investigations, the design phases, the construction sequences, the economical and financial aspects and the monitoring and maintenance of underground structures. The year you will spend in Politecnico di Torino, with the Master’s sponsors, the top-level lecturers and the interesting technical visits, together with a strong effort, will provide you with a fundamental step in the development of your career and with a network that you would never have the chance of build up in such an easy and rapid way.

My experience during the master course “Tunnelling and Tunnel Boring Machines” has been verysatisfactory, because I not only could expand my knowledge about this fascinating field, but also I had the opportunity to meet and share experiences with many professionals of all around the world. I believe this was the most important aspect as I could have a very wide vision of methods, work costumes, technologies and ground conditions from experiences in different projects in which each tunnel expert worked. We could also visit some very interesting works in Italy and abroad, being supported by a very good organization. For all these aspects, I widely recommend this master course, that besides is done in a wonderful city.

The Tunnelling & Tunnel Boring Machines Master course has to be considered a very interesting choice for people who wants to be involved in their job career in the world of the tunnels construction. It has been very positive to receive the direct experience, both of life and of work, of people coming from different part of the world considering both the Lectures and the Master Course Colleagues. This experience will help you to expand your mind from a personal point of view and to acquired a quite strong experience about all aspects involved in the tunnel construction. The internship will be a good way to be projected in the world and an occasion to see directly and put in practice all the information acquired during the lectures. After my internship period performed in Rome where I have been involved in the excavation of Metro Line C, I started to work for the Joint Venture Metro C S.c.p.a. led by Astaldi s.p.a. and now I am just starting to work for TOTO Costruzioni Generali s.p.a. for the Sparvo Tunnel project, the excavation of two twin highway of approximately 2,5 km long each one with the world bigger TBM.
